ERECTED BY WILLIAM CHAPLIN

William Chaplin, veteran of Massachusetts' 6th Regiment, gave money to erect a monument in memory of the many Civil War soldiers laid to rest at Mount Hope Cemetery.  He also provided money for perpetual care for their graves.    A Boston Globe article "Saves from Pension to Provide Fund to Care for Graves of Comrades, " June 3, 1923 recounts the story of his gift and discusses his life.  More information about him is available through the Acton Memorial Library's online Civil War Archives.
